E Day

How I wish I was on planet Mars. This whole election day hullaballoo is seriously annoying me. I am tired of coming across DTP thuggery in the form of billboards, newspaper adverts and tons of fuljetti in my letterbox. It is Maltese citizenship at its best, with the tlaqna ghalihom ja qatta' liba attitude at full blast. It's like being at Ta' Qali during the early nineties, waiting for the referee to initiate the classic confrontation between Valletta and Hamrun: seats flying, red-dyed chickens thrown in the pitch, insults galore and a general feel of barbarism.

But this does not worry me as such. Been there, done that and I'm sure there will be more to come in the future. My major concern is what's going to happen afterwards. Unlike previous elections (at least the ones I remember) I sense an enormous amount of frustration in the air. Barring any major upsets, it's either the blues or the reds who are going to govern the island for another term. However, this time round, the followers of the losing party are most likely to put the blame on their own leaders. It's either the Nationalists who were arroganti or the Labourites who were suppervi. Either way, there's going to be a lot of pent-up self-directed anger added to the jibes and vexing of the winning side.

I hope this is all crap and I'm wrong about it.

On a positive note, yesterday I had a 6-a-side match at the Infetti ground. I won't brag about how I was man of the match or about the magnificent top-right-hand-corner save I did. I want to mention that on the pitch next to us there was a group of early twenties guys who decided to play Nationalists versus Labourites. They were great. They insulted each other's politicians, mums and sisters, laughed at Sant's toupee` and Gonzi's acne, and chanted innijiet and slogans; and they were enjoying themselves silly. I left as they were getting ready to go to McDonalds together. Apparently there is still hope that some time that tug-of-war rope might one day be snipped.

It Never Fails To Amaze Me...

Every now and then I come across something that leaves me in awe at the power of the internet. For instance:

1. I found THIS enthusiastic blog post about Frankenstein, the play I wrote and performed last April;

2. Which lead me to THIS review of the said play;

3. Which somehow led me to THIS article on Wikipedia that references my review of Malizia (1973) in What's He Filming In There?

Astounding.
